Brooklyn N.Y. - The Avengers men's basketball team saw their season come to an end Friday night when they suffered a defeat to the Baltimore City Panthers in the District III Championship. The Region XV champions ASA fell in the close contest 76-68 and finished up their season with a 12-13 record. With this win, the Panthers earned a NJCAA Tournament bid and improved their record to 21-11.
ASA kept the game close the first half and trailed by just five points as they went into the break, 38-33. The Avengers came out strong in the second half and tied the game up 41-41 with just over 17:00 left in the half. Baltimore City was able to retake the lead and the Avengers could not answer back and when the half ended the score stood at 76-68. The Panthers outshot the Avengers 49.1% to 36.4% from the field and 47.6% to 33.3% from behind the three point arc. Scoring off the bench proved to be a big factor in the game; The Panthers bench outscored the Avengers 37-9.
Three players finished with double figures for the Avengers led by freshman Cesar Ramirez (New York, NY) who scored 16 points. Freshman Robert Terrero (Washington Heights, NY) recorded a double double by scoring 15 points and bringing down 15 rebounds. All-Region XV player freshman Joshua Hightower (Cooksville MD) also finished the contest with 15 points. Leading the scoring for the Panthers was Malik Marrow with 24 points and Kobby Ayetey with 18 points.
The Avengers finished their season as Region XV Champions but fell just one win short of making the NJCAA National Tournament. ASA also had two players named to the All-Region XV team, Joshua Hightower and Jose Pabon.
