New Rochelle, N.Y. - The ASA College Avengers men's basketball team were crowned Region XV Division One champions this weekend after defeating the Monroe Mustangs 71-65 in the championship game. The Avengers will now move on to play in the District III Championship Game where they will face the Baltimore City Community College Panthers with the winner moving on to Hutchinson, Kansas for the National Championship Tournament.
The Avengers started off the weekend by earning a victory in the Region XV semi-finals over the Harcum College Bears 88-81. Freshman Robert Terrero (Washington Heights, NY) led the way for the Avengers finishing with a double-double (24 pts, 10 rebs). ASA also received key contributions from freshman Cesar Ramirez (New York, NY) who finished with 22 points and freshman Joshua Hightower (Cooksville, MD) who totaled 21 points. The Avengers marched on to the Region XV championship game where they met the Monroe Mustangs.
ASA faced a tough challenge to capture the Region XV championship as they had to travel to play Monroe College on their home court. The Avengers rose to the challenge and started the game strong with a total team effort on defense as they limited the Mustangs to just 24 first half points. ASA continued to put pressure on Monroe on their way to a 71-65 victory and a regional championship, the second in the last 5 years for the Avengers. A key factor in this victory was the Avengers success from behind the arc as they hit 46.4% of their three point attempts. Leading the way was freshman Joshua Hightower who finished the game with 12 points, 8 assists and 4 rebounds on his was to being named MVP of the Region XV Championship. Also receiving honors were sophomore Jose Pabon (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and freshman Robert Terrero as they were named to the All-Tournament team. ASA Coach Devonne Martinez was very proud of his team's effort and said "This was our best defensive effort all year. Overall I am proud of how the team was unselfish and came together". After the victory Martinez was named Region XV Coach of the Year.
The Avengers will look to continue their season as they will play in the District III championship game against the Baltimore City College Panthers.
