ASA College baseball is on a roll unlike any they've been on all season.
The Avengers were a middling outfit just a week ago, hovering around the .500 mark. But following a five-game winning streak, they're now sitting at 14-11-1 and poised to blow past the competition.
During its current winning streak, ASA is averaging an astounding 11 runs per game. And for their once-maligned pitching staff, it, too, has appeared to have turned the corner and is beginning to ascend.
ASA jumpstarted the streak with an impressive 20-run output against Raritan Valley Community College on April 12, and followed that up with 10 more runs against Bronx Community just a day later. The real bonus during this streak, however, was a captivating double-header win over rival Monroe College on the 15th that featured thrilling 7-4 and 6-5 wins, respectively.
During that afternoon-evening doubleheader, ASA was spearheaded by three RBIs apiece from Reynaldo Guillen and Miguel Medina. Guillen, a sophomore third baseman, went 2-for-5, including a double and a run, while Medina, a freshman shortstop, went 3-for-4, including a walk. Freshman second baseman Nestor Francisco also added three hits and a run, as the Avengers jumped on the Mustangs early by notching three runs in the top of the second inning and never looking back. The pitching was just as refined, as Fabel Saneaux and Luis Sanchez Tejada (5-0) combined for the four-hit win, with the latter going 4 1/3 innings and yielding just one hit and fanning eight. The evening affair featured an exciting finish, as ASA scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth. Guillen (3-for-4, with a double) again registered three RBIs and the pitching was again clutch, as the Avengers yielded just six hits on the strength of five pitchers. Alfredo Yan (2-3) got the win by serving 1 1/3 scoreless innings and striking out two of the four batters he faced.
The season has taken a quick turn for the better for ASA, as they look to continue its torrid streak. Up next is a matchup at Harford Community College, on Wednesday.
